Mesh WiFi systems work by having a main unit connect to your existing modem which then connects to one or more 'satellite' units which repeat the signal across your home. In higher end systems, the satellite units have a dedicated wireless link between each other to improve performance.
Our technicians have noticed many clients have spent more money trying to solve their bad WiFi than it would have cost for a cabling and WiFi solution installed by a professional.
As of the 29th of August 2021, we can see prices ranging between $399 and $1749 for Google, D-Link and Netgear WiFi solutions from a leading retailer. If you are happy to spend this sort of money then it is worth your time to research the other options out there as you might be able to save money and achieve a better result.
Pros:
1. The cheaper systems can cost less than installing Ethernet cabling, simply buy the kit from a leading retailer and plug it in.
2. Higher end systems can provide performance that matches some NBN connections.
3. Some systems can make use of existing Ethernet cabling to provide better performance.
4. Can be installed by an ordinary person with no cabling experience.
5. Very good performance in timber frame homes. Most of these systems are designed for American homes which the majority are timber frame.
Cons:
1. Often, the high-end Mesh WiFi systems cost more than a cabled solution.
2. Interference can affect wireless signals at different times and because it works perfectly when first installed, you might blame your internet provider.
3. Firmware updates have changed the performance of older systems. Usually after the warranty period has expired.
4. Our technicians have attended many jobs where the mesh WiFi system is set up incorrectly and preventing network devices from talking to each other.
5. Inconsistent or Reduced performance in brick houses, especially ones with thick / complex walls.
There are 2 alternatives to a mesh WiFi system which you must consider:
1. Relocate your modem/NBN Point to a better area. A central location usually works best.
2. Install Ethernet to one or more WiFi access points which can be located anywhere as they receive power + data through the same cable.
Both options require an ACMA Registered cabler to implement and we recommend you contact one for a quote before purchasing anything.
If you do not care about the technology but simply want your WiFi fixed then get in touch for a discussion. We believe the best solution is the one that fits your price and performance requirements.
For each job we will consider if you are better off with Mesh WiFi or a cabling and WiFi solution.
We can deploy a simple system where your entire house has a single network name (SSID) and password. If you tell us to set the new network up with the same details as your old one, all of your existing devices instantly connect to the new system. Great if you have a lot of 'smart devices' which can be annoying to reset.
